About The Department

  • The Department of Anatomy at Tagore Medical College & hospital, Chennai was established in the year 2010. The department has highly experienced and dedicated faculty, state of art infrastructure and facilities to impart high quality, clinically relevant education in an experiential learning environment.

Goals And Focus

  • MBBS students are given a sound grounding in gross and microanatomy along with developmental anatomy with its inherent anomalies for understanding the anatomical basis of various clinical problems and disease presentations. Several learning methodologies are adopted and initiated like small group teaching, vertical integration, interdisciplinary (professional) student interaction and improvement in the formative and summative evaluation.

Objectives

At the end of the course the student should be able to apply the anatomical knowledge acquired during the course to:

  • Identify and locate all anatomical structures of the body.
  • Establish the configuration of the surface of the body, especially in its relation to deeper parts.
  • Distinguish various normal tissues under a microscope.
  • Understand the normal development and identify the major congenital anomalies.
  • Understand the principles of newer imaging techniques and interpretation of x-rays, computerized Tomography (CT) Scan, MRI, and sonograms.
  • Understand the anatomical basis of common clinical problems and procedures i.e., intramuscular & intravenous injection, lumbar puncture and kidney biopsy etc.

Infrastructure

Dissection hall

  • A very spacious and well-ventilated dissection hall has the infrastructure to accommodate 150 students. The department provides 10 cadavers for dissection and demonstration every year, for 150 students.

Museum

  • Dissected human body parts, models of the human body and developmental details of prenatal life are exhibited. Students find these museum specimens helpful in consolidating what they learnt in the dissection hall.

Histology laboratory

  • The laboratory is equipped with more than a hundred microscopes and other infrastructures that help students understand the microscopic structure of human organs and the organization of tissues.

Departmental library

  • A hub of knowledge with old as well as latest editions of Anatomy books.

CME Organized by the Department

  • Stem cell research and its application

Research and Publications

  • Both the faculty and the students are encouraged to do research on advanced topics in anatomy and have the resources to do so. We enable them to plan investigative procedures for research, analyze data critically and derive logical conclusions. The research focus is on cadaveric studies of clinical relevance, experimental studies and medical education.
