Vision & Mission

Vision

To achieve excellence in pathology through integrated diagnostics and education, ensuring that high-quality healthcare is accessible to all communities and contributes to the overall well-being of the population we serve.

Mission

  • Clinical Excellence: To provide physicians and patients with accurate, evidence-based, and timely diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic information to guide optimal patient management.
  • Educational Leadership: To provide comprehensive and high-caliber medical education to MBBS and MD Pathology students, fostering a deep understanding of disease mechanisms and nurturing the next generation of proficient medical professionals.
  • Quality Assurance: To rigorously establish, implement, and maintain a robust Quality Management System (QMS), ensuring that all laboratory operations meet stringent standards of accuracy, reliability, and safety.

I. Departmental Overview and Scope of Services

The Department of Pathology functions as a core clinical service department, providing comprehensive diagnostic support integrated within the hospital complex. The department’s clinical and laboratory operations encompass several specialized divisions, including:

  • Histopathology
  • Cytopathology
  • Haematology & Clinical Pathology
  • Blood Centre and Transfusion Medicine

Operating within the hospital building, these units provide continuous diagnostic oversight and essential laboratory services to support patient care and clinical excellence.

II. Diagnostic Capabilities and Infrastructure

The Central Laboratory maintains a high standard of diagnostic precision through specialized sections equipped with state-of-the-art technology:

  • Hematology and Clinical Pathology: Fully integrated with advanced diagnostic technology, including Automated Blood Cell Counters, Coagulometers, and Automated Urine Strip Readers to ensure rapid and accurate results.
  • Cytology: The laboratory utilizes high-precision Liquid-Based Cytology (Eziprep) systems, significantly enhancing the sensitivity and reliability of cytological evaluations.
  • Histopathology: Our comprehensive histopathology suite is equipped for high-volume, high-precision processing. Key instrumentation includes:
    • Automated Tissue Processors and Automated Slide Stainers.
    • Cryostat for intraoperative frozen section analysis.
    • Tissue Embedding Stations.
    • A dedicated facility for specialized Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing.

III. Blood Centre and Transfusion Medicine

The Blood Centre operates as a critical, 24/7 service unit, staffed by a dedicated team of skilled technicians to ensure the highest standards of transfusion safety:

  • Component Separation: Ensures optimal utilization of donor blood through advanced separation techniques, providing tailored support (Packed Red Cells, Fresh Frozen Plasma, and Platelets).
  • Advanced Immunohematology: Equipped with Gel Card Technology for standardized Blood Grouping, Cross-matching, and Direct/Indirect Coombs Testing.
  • Rigorous Screening: Patient safety is prioritized through the ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) technique for the mandatory screening of all donor units.

IV. Academic Infrastructure and Learning Resources

The department provides a robust academic environment designed to support Undergraduate (MBBS) and Postgraduate (MD Pathology) education:

  • Instructional Facilities: Two dedicated demonstration rooms are equipped with modern audiovisual aids, including slide projectors, OHP, and Nikon Trinocular microscopes with integrated camera systems for digital imaging.
  • Advanced Microscopy: For interactive learning, the lab features a Pentahead Teaching Microscope, allowing for simultaneous multi-user viewing and real-time faculty-student discussion.
  • Pathology Museum: Houses approximately 350 clinical specimens, each meticulously catalogued with detailed descriptive data for morphological study.
  • Departmental Library: A curated collection of over 200 essential textbooks and reference materials is maintained for student use.

V. Faculty, Pedagogy, and Research

  • Regulatory Compliance: The department is staffed in strict accordance with National Medical Commission (NMC) norms, ensuring an optimal student-teacher ratio for personalized mentorship.
  • Diverse Pedagogy: Beyond traditional lectures, the curriculum integrates Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Small Group Teaching, and E-Learning initiatives.
  • Academic Monitoring: We maintain a proactive approach to student progression through regular Parent-Teacher Meetings and structured feedback mechanisms.
  • Research Excellence: Students are actively encouraged to engage in scholarly activities, including national conferences and paper presentations. The department’s research commitment is highlighted by over eight sanctioned ICMR projects to date.
