Department

Overview

The Department of Pharmacology was established in 2010. Every year about 150 students enter the Department of Pharmacology after successfully completing I MBBS, where knowledge about the drugs, their uses, dosage and adverse effects are being taught in a systematic way.

Objectives

At the end of the course, the student should acquire knowledge and skills to

  • Describe the Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of essential and commonly used drugs
  • List the indications, contra-indications, interactions and adverse reactions of commonly used drugs
  • Integrate the concept of rational drug therapy in clinical pharmacology and should be able to
    • Prescribe drugs for common ailments.
    • Recognize adverse reactions and interactions of commonly used drugs

The Department has an Experimental Laboratory and Clinical Laboratory which are well equipped as per MCI norms and can accommodate 75 Students.

The Department Library houses latest books in plenty to quench the thirst of the undergraduate students.

The well set museum has 300 drug exhibits which gives wide information about medicinal and toxicological plants, different types of drug samples with their dosage and indication for use, crude drugs. History of medicine charts available in the Museum are very nicely displayed.

Two spacious Demo room equipped with LCD projector and computer are available for the student’s demonstration where small group discussions are held.

The department is also involved in teaching e-learning modules particularly in relative to animal experiments in a humane way. They learn how each drug acts in a scientific way.

The lecture hall is fully air-conditioned which can accommodate 150 students and is equipped with LCD projector, computer and audio equipments.

The Department research Lab is available with required equipments to enable the faculty to involve in research activity. The ongoing and completed projects lists are displayed.

The under graduate students are encouraged to do small research projects for ICMR and other scientific bodies under the guidance of the faculty.

The Department is involved in the conduct of many committee meetings

Institutional Ethics Committee:

The committee functions effectively having a chairman, social scientist, lawyer, biological scientist and a lay person from outside the institution as per ICMR guidelines and senior Professors from within the college.

A well written SOP is available for the conduct of the committee. This committee also looks into the ethical aspect of every research project which has been cleared by the scientific committee.

Institutional Animal Ethics Committee:

This Committee was constituted in 2010 which has Dean as the Chairperson with Professor of Pharmacology as Member Secretary along with nominees of CPCSEA. This committee has been approved by CPCSEA, Government of India. Meetings are convened twice a year where Research protocols will be presented and approved.

Pharmacovigilance committee:

HOD of the Department of Pharmacology is the Member secretary and HODs of Clinical Departments like Medicine, Surgery, O.G., Psychiatry, Dermatology and Ophthalmology are members. The committee meets 1st Monday of every month to highlight the importance of ADR monitoring and recording the same. This committee motivates the clinician to look for ADR and report so that they can be forwarded to the National coordinating committee of Government of India.

This meeting is also the forum where various drug related reactions are discussed in detail.

Pharmacy Therapeutic Committee:

The motto of this committee is to ensure the rational use of drug. It ensures that the cost effective drugs are dispensed. It keeps a check on the procurement, storage, distribution and expiry date of the drugs.

This committee works with the HOD of Medicine as the Chairperson with a pharmacologist as the Member Secretary and Pharmacist as the Coordinator

This helps in tracking the use of safe and effective medicine and to safe guard that the right medicine reaches the right patient.

Drug Information Centre:

This centre is proposed to be started so that drug related information like dose, frequency of dose, ADR and information about various poisons are available to the treating clinician

A toll – free number will be provided, so that information can be obtained very quickly.

The department conducts CME twice yearly where recent developments in the field of medicine are available to all clinicians and students. The faculties are encouraged to participate in National / international conference to present papers

Special programmes are conducted for students quarterly to encourage them to talk confidently in a big audience and also to stay updated with recent advances.

Well equipped Animal House is available in the campus. The Animal House is built and maintained as per CPCSEA guidelines and it is approved by the CPCSEA. It is maintained under the supervision of a well trained and experienced Veterinarian.

  • Introduction to research methodology on 8th December (Accredited by TamilNadu Medical Council with 2 credit hours & TN MGR university has accredited by 10 credit points)
