Department

The Department of Orthopaedics specialises in surgical treatment of various orthopaedic problems. There are three independent units within the department at present run by dedicated faculties which comprises of one professor and two associate Professors. All three units function as general Orthopedics unit which handles Trauma all around at same time handles Arthroplasty and Arthroscopy cases as well Spine disorders are also individually handled by all three units.

The department is well equipped with two aircondition OT’s one major and one Minor and also one Emergency OT kept stand by 24/7 to manage trauma cases from casualty staffed with one senior professor, two associate professors, One Assistant professors four senior resident, two junior resident. We perform about eight to ten major cases and 10 to 15 minor cases per week. Many consultants have had specialised surgical training abroad, in different fields of orthopaedics such as arthroscopy, arthroplasty, and spine disorders management.

There are outpatient clinics from Monday to Saturday. Patients who need emergency care are attended to 24 x 7 in the Emergency services.
Dedicated patient care, clinical teaching and research are the core areas of priority.

The following are the services offered.

    • Primary hip and Knee arthroplasty
    • Revision arthroplasties
    • Spine surgeries including Posterior Lumbar Inter body Fusion, Lumbar discectomy and decompression, treatment of spinal infections.
    • Sports medicine including Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction and diagnostic arthroscopy for meniscal injury
    • Treatment of all routine, complex trauma and neglected trauma.
    • The department also has modern Physiotherapy Unit which has facilities like laser therapy, shortwave diathermy, interferential therapy, wax therapy and rehabilitation equipments.

Organ donation awareness at Tagore Medical College and Hospital, Chennai

The department was started in 2010 with a mandate to create knowledge, advance learning, and improve the musculoskeletal health at the community, provincial, national, and international levels. Excellent facilities are available for clinical as well basic research. Currently process is going on for inititation of ICMR projects. Faculty from the department regularly attend regional, national conferences and so far 11 papers have been published in various national and international journals from the department within past two years. Teamwork, Dedication, Constant endeavor for excellence and professional care are the hallmarks of the department.
